Anchoring a Free Note to Another Element
Sequence Diagram Editor  Top  Previous  Next

By default, free notes use absolute layout to where their position is offset from the diagram origin (below the title and description). Using absolute layout means that the free note will not move if additional flow elements are added to the diagram before its current location. This may or may not be the desired behavior.

Anchoring allows the free note to use relative layout where its position is offset from a diagram element rather than the diagram origin. The note can still be positioned anywhere in the diagram, but if the anchor element is moved the free note will also move by the same amount.

The anchor element can be set and/or cleared at any time.

To set the anchor element for a free note using the input form:
·Select the diagram element that should serve as the anchor element (only one element can be selected)
·Select the free note to anchor using Ctrl selection (hold Ctrl key while selecting the free note so that both the anchor and the free note are selected)
·Click the Set Anchor... button in the input form
·The anchor element information will appear in the input form and the layout will be set to relative
·Click the Apply button or press Enter to commit changes

To set the anchor element for a free note using a command:
·Select both the diagram element and the free note to anchor (use Ctrl selection to select both elements)
·Invoke the Set Anchor command from the diagram menu (Diagram | Free Notes | Set Anchor) or context menu

To clear the anchor element for a free note:
·Select the free note
·Select the Absolute layout radio button in the input form (the anchor element should be cleared)
·Click Apply button or press Enter to commit changes

The free note can also be anchored while it is being created (see Adding a New Free Note.)

Anchoring Errors
The anchor element and the free note must be the only selected diagram elements in order for anchoring to succeed.

·If no anchor element is selected the following error message is displayed.

To resolve this problem make sure an anchor element is selected along with the free note before trying to anchor it.

·If there are multiple diagram elements selected with the free note the following error message is displayed.

To resolve this problem make sure only a single diagram element is selected as the anchor (along with the free note).
